The Program

What to Expect from This Tour

Journey to Athens, Greece! is a culmination of everything I have learned this summer from participating in the study abroad program at Mercer University. This unique program, known as "Philosophy and Art in Greece: the Virtual Experience," is an opportunity for current Mercer students, professors, alumni, and friends of the university to travel together to Greece, virtually. Our guide, George Kokkos, takes us across Athens as we learn about the city, its history, its art, and its culture from the comfort of our homes.

Your Guide

That's me!

My name is Ben Browne, and I am a rising sophomore at Mercer University. I am studying mathematics, with a minor in music, though we aren't covering math and music here. Don't worry, I'm interested in philosophy as well, and I'm excited to explore the home of many of the world's greatest philosophers with you this summer. I'm taking you on this tour of Athens as a part of the class, "Philosophy and Art in Greece," that I am taking through Mercer. I have never been abroad, but I hope to visit Greece in person in the future. Until then, I'm thankful for this opportunity to take you to Athens virtually.

The Art of Travel

by Alain de Botton

For anyone who dreams of going abroad, I would recommend reading Alain de Botton's The Art of Travel before you go (or at least take it with you). Most people focus on where they are going when they travel, but they don't take much time to focus on why. De Botton, in Travel, invites you to think about why you are called to a specific locale and what you may be trying to leave behind at home. As you explore this site, be on the lookout for more references to de Botton and his book.
